CMA Case-Based Questions: Understanding the Current English Format
Current English CMA preparation should include case-based application. Read the scenario, identify the requested decision and connect your calculations to the business facts.
Check the format for your testing window
IMA’s announced transition allowed English candidates to choose essays or case-based questions in May/June 2026. From September/October 2026, case-based questions became the standard English format outside the excluded regional essay tracks. This guide addresses the current English case-based path, not China, Japan or Taiwan essay-track content.
The content outline is distinct from the response format: changing the final section does not mean that domain weights or tested topics changed. Confirm your appointment-specific requirements directly with IMA.
Know the overall exam structure
Each part has 100 multiple-choice questions over three hours, followed by two case-based question sets over one hour. IMA requires at least 50% of the multiple-choice questions to be answered correctly to advance to the case-based section. That progression rule is not the overall CMA passing standard.
Case-based sets contain a business scenario and related response tasks. Consult IMA’s examples for the current response interactions rather than assuming an old essay-writing exercise matches what you will see.
Read requirements before building a solution
Identify what each task requests: calculation, interpretation, risk assessment or a management decision. Note units, periods and assumptions. Read the scenario with those requirements in mind, separating relevant facts from background.
For a variance case, calculate the requested variance, then relate the direction to operating conditions. For an investment case, distinguish relevant cash flows from accounting amounts. Do not apply a familiar formula until you have checked that its assumptions fit.
Prepare for linked application without overclaiming
Practice short business scenarios that require more than one concept, then explain the decision supported by your work. Recheck arithmetic and signs, but also ask whether the answer addresses the actual requirement.
ATMF’s CMA lessons support domain learning and understanding checks. This article explains a preparation method and official format; it does not imply that draft practice banks or full case-based mocks are currently included as learner-accessible tools.
Questions candidates ask
Did the transition create a new content outline?
The response-format transition should not be treated as invented topic or weight changes. Verify the applicable official outline separately.
Is the 50% progression gate the passing score?
No. It controls entry to the final section; it is not a conversion to the official overall passing result.
