CMA Exam Prep
CMA Part 1 vs Part 2: How the Content and Skills Differ
Both CMA parts combine knowledge with business application. Compare their official domains before choosing a sequence and building a study calendar.
Understand the two-part structure
Part 1 is Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics. Its domains are external financial reporting decisions (15%), planning, budgeting and forecasting (20%), performance management (20%), cost management (15%), internal controls (15%), and technology and analytics (15%). These are the weights in the ICMA outline effective September 1, 2024. Check the current outline for your appointment.
Part 2 is Strategic Financial Management: financial statement analysis (20%), corporate finance (20%), business decision analysis (25%), enterprise risk management (10%), capital investment decisions (10%), and professional ethics (15%). Weights describe examination coverage, not the exact hours you should allocate.
Part 1: build the operating picture
Connect budgets, cost behavior and performance measures rather than studying each as an isolated formula. A variance calculation is only the beginning: explain what caused the difference, who can influence it, and whether the measure encourages a useful decision.
For controls and analytics, connect a business risk with evidence and a response. An example that changes volume or cost assumptions is a useful way to check whether your explanation survives beyond the first calculation.
Part 2: evaluate financial decisions
Practice interpreting ratios alongside business circumstances. A changing ratio can reflect several causes; the task is to distinguish plausible explanations using the scenario. For investment and financing decisions, make assumptions explicit and check that cash flows and discount rates are treated consistently.
Ethics deserves dedicated application time. Identify the obligation, the conflict and the appropriate action. Do not assume that recognizing an ethical label means you can choose the best response to a workplace dilemma.
Select a sequence from your baseline
A budgeting or cost-management background may make parts of Part 1 familiar; finance or analysis experience may help with Part 2. Neither background covers every domain. Try a representative task from each and list specific gaps.
ATMF offers a separate course for each part and a two-part bundle. The courses contain structured lessons and checks. Review current catalog details and official registration rules before selecting your course order.
Questions candidates ask
Must I take Part 1 first?
Choose your sequence under the current IMA registration rules; your baseline and calendar should inform the preparation order.
Do domain weights equal study-time percentages?
No. A heavily weighted familiar domain may need less learning time than an unfamiliar smaller domain, while all domains still require coverage.
