How to Study for FAR: A Practical CPA Exam Study Plan

Build a FAR study plan around what you can explain and apply—not just how many chapters you finish. Start with a realistic weekly budget, then use repeated practice to uncover gaps.

Start with the current FAR blueprint

FAR asks you to connect financial reporting concepts with accounting treatments. Organize your study around the current AICPA blueprint rather than an old chapter list. Financial reporting, balance-sheet accounts and selected transactions need different kinds of practice. For each topic, record the accounting rule, the event that triggers it, and the effect on the statements.

Do not treat familiarity from work as proof of mastery. You may prepare one type of transaction regularly while rarely seeing another. A short closed-book explanation is a better starting point than rereading everything at the same pace.

Build a week you can actually repeat

Choose a study budget that survives an ordinary work week. An illustrative eight-week schedule might reserve weeks one through five for coverage and cumulative review, weeks six and seven for mixed application, and the final week for targeted review and exam logistics. This is an example, not a completion or passing guarantee; extend it when your baseline or available hours require.

Within each week, alternate learning and retrieval. A 45-minute session can include 20 minutes learning one concept, 15 minutes applying it, and 10 minutes explaining errors. Keep a small weekend buffer so a missed weekday does not force you to abandon the entire schedule.

Use an accounting error log

For each missed question, write what you thought was happening, the correct treatment and the cue you overlooked. Separate conceptual errors from arithmetic, classification and timing errors. Repeatedly missing the same distinction means your next session should address that distinction—not simply add more questions.

Example: if you calculate a depreciation amount correctly but place it in the wrong period, recomputing ten similar amounts is less useful than explaining the recognition date and timeline. Build one contrasting example where the date changes.

Practice beyond recognition

After a topic lesson, close your notes and reconstruct the journal entries, statement effects or reconciliation. Then change an assumption and explain the result. For task-based work, identify the deliverable before reading every exhibit. Practice organizing supporting information and checking that your answer addresses the requirement.

ATMF’s FAR course provides structured lessons and knowledge checks. Use those checks to decide what to revisit; any mock or external sample score is evidence about that sample, not a promise about the official exam.

Decide what to review next

Once a week, review your errors by topic and ask whether you can solve a fresh example without a hint. Give the next study block to the most persistent conceptual gap. Keep a modest cumulative review block for earlier topics, even when you move on. Before booking or changing your appointment, confirm eligibility and scheduling rules with your board and exam administrator.

Questions candidates ask

Should I study FAR first?

Choose the order that fits your background and appointment constraints. There is no universal section order; assess your current strengths and the applicable scheduling rules.

Does finishing every lesson mean I am ready?

No. Readiness also requires independent application, retained understanding and time management on unfamiliar questions.
